The AMA has advised the best time for most people to receive their flu shot is late April to early May. This gives good protection through winter and adequate coverage for peak flu season in July and August.
Last year as many as 1100 people died from flu-related illness. There were almost 250,000 confirmed flu infections and more than 29,000 hospitalisations.
Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect you from flu. It doesn’t provide complete protection but is usually 60 to 70 per cent effective in healthy adults.
This year the government has introduced two new, free super vaccines for people over 65, to better protect the elderly who are most at risk from influenza.
Free regular vaccinations will be available for eligible people who are most vulnerable to influenza, including pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people with chronic health conditions.
Having a flu vaccination not only can help stop you getting the flu; it can also help to protect vulnerable people in the community, such as babies too young to be vaccinated.
Should you become ill in the coming months and think you may have influenza, please advise our reception staff when making a booking to see a doctor. Please remind staff when you check in at clinic so that our staff can make arrangements to care for you and also to help prevent the spread of flu to vulnerable patients.
